Craft : Ajrakh Block Print Originating in Ajrakhpur, Ajrakh is an ancient Indian craft inspired by the wonders of nature.

Its symmetric motifs symbolize the beauties of nature in geometric forms that come from an Islamic art. Made using natural dyes and hand block-printed to perfection, Ajrakh amalgamates with the fabric texture just rightly.

Ajrakh is block printed on textiles like cotton, mashru, modal, etc. with the following technique:

  • The raw/white fabric is soaked in water overnight to remove shrinkage and then, soaked in boiled water to remove starch if any.
  • Once dried, the white fabric is then dyed using Harda powder.
  • The resist print is made by mixing gum Arabic and jaggery.
  • The black print is printed on top of the resist print. The colour is made by rusting the iron, adding tamarind seed powder and jaggery.
  • The red print is a mixer of Multani Mitti, gum Arabic and alum.
  • The indigo print is made by adding indigo powder and jaggery to water.
  • The green print is applied by spraying turmeric water and boiled water of pomegranate skin onto the printed fabric and then dipping it into alum water.
  • The dyed fabric is then dipped in boiling water which contains alizarine.
  • Final wash is done in a big tube well, with clean and pure water.
  • Lastly, the printed fabric is kept for drying on the sand.
